2,300 years ago, Alexander the Great, the Conqueror, penetrated far into the
East, reaching as far as modern-day India. He appreciated
and accepted the culture he found there, and took
the view that he could adopt some elements of their
culture in order to attain perfection.
He left troops
on mount Hindukush so that there would be a mix
of cultures. Even to this day, the Kalas tribe
speaks Ancient Greek of the Doric dialect together
with Sanskrit (ancient Indian).
Their music and dance is similar to the music
and dance of the Macedons. Their architectural
contains distinct elements of Macedon architecture.
And of course, their cuisine has influences from
ancient Macedon cuisine.
Even to this
day Alexander the Great –Iskandar– is worshipped
as a god.
Iskandar, the Indian restaurant, was established
out of particular respect and love for this culture
which has much to teach us.
